If a kitchen utensil comes into contact with bodily waste, should it be thrown away or just cleaned?

Honestly, I would always remember what the object was used for and would not be able to use it to prepare my food....so into the trash it would go. But, stainless steel is used in operating rooms of hospitals and is made to be disinfected. So after the object was used (ewwww) it could be thoroughly washed and disinfected and not harm any food put into it afterward.
