Epidural steroid injections?

i was wondering if anyone could tell me how effective epidural steroid injections for low back pain are . i have been offered one after two failed discectomys and i have disc degeneration and narrowing of the foramen . could you tell me if it helps and is there any side effects and how painfull it is to have done . thank you .
